Weather the Storm – Women Prepare

back to home

Kate Lawrence, the program coordinator, has been working on fine-tuning the program for months but it is the participant-led trials will ensure that Weather the Storm is topical, relevant and accessible.

Natural disasters are endemic to Australia but the past decade has seen event after event devastating communities. In 2008, the Whittlesea area in Victoria experienced the savage effects of the Black Saturday bushfires, and Eungella, near Mackay in Queensland is still recovering from the floods there earlier this year. Both places will be hosting the upcoming Weather the Storm trials and the feedback from participants will inform any changes to the program.

But why a program aimed specifically at women? Kate Lawrence suggests that, “women have unique needs and vulnerabilities during and after a disaster. They also make a unique and vital contribution to preparation and recovery”. Much of her concern stems from the idea that communities have come to rely too much on governments and emergency services when they actually have the potential to rely on themselves, “in large disasters most first responders are actually ordinary citizens”. Harnessing this potential is what Weather the Storm – Women Prepare is all about.
