Mate Helping Mate

Men and Women are invited to a community event with guest speaker John Harper.

John is a farmer from Stockinbingal (Southern NSW) who, in 2006 began running what came to be known as ‘Mate Helping Mate’.

Mate Helping Mate has been very successful in raising awareness of the need to maintain mental well being in times of stress and anxiety by focusing on activities that enhance social networking and mental health in rural communities.

Please join us in a relaxed and informal atmosphere. The event is free and a BBQ supper will be provided.

A Workshop for Older Farmers Making Farm Work Easier as we get Older

The UPA in conjunction with the Little River Landcare Group of Yeoval is running a workshop that will be of interest to all farmers of around 55 years and older.

The Workshop is a very practical workshop where farmers will discuss the farm work that is getting harder as they get older, and will provide opportunity to thinks about the ways that older farmers can get MORE FIT FOR FARM WORK as older people, as well as ways that farm work can be made MORE FIT FOR THE OLDER FARMER.

The resources that will be made available have been produced by groups of older farmers all around Australia, helped by people in the Australian Centre for Agricultural Health and Safety at Moree, in country NSW.

All older farmers who have been part of the program to date have found the experience very worthwhile, and have found some satisfaction in realising that their increasing difficulties in some areas of work are not unique to them.

First national Indigenous Youth Parliament: Participants wanted

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Indigenous right to vote in federal elections, the Australian Electoral Commission, in partnership with the YMCA, is running the first ever National Indigenous Youth Parliament, and applications are now open.

Young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people between the ages of 16 and 25, who are passionate about making positive changes in their communities, are invited to apply. In all, 48 young people will be chosen to represent their communities and have the chance to speak up on issues that are important to them during the Youth Parliament, which will be held in late May 2012.

Participants will undergo a training weekend in April, where they will learn to draft a parliamentary bill. They will then attend a week-long residential program in Canberra and present their bills in the Old Parliament House. Social activities and opportunities to meet MPs are also included.

National Rural Women’s Network Goes International

New YorkThe National Rural Women’s Coalition (NRWC) has been invited to demonstrate the national and international potential of its new National Rural Women’s Network™ at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York on March 2nd.

A live webinar will link women from all over the world to the meeting. Entitled “Networking Rural Women” the event will demonstrate how the virtual rural women’s network operates and the power of that Network to not only link women farmers and rural women in Australia but potentially women all over the world.

What is CSW?

The Commission on the Status of Women

The Commission on the Status of Women is one of the nine functional committees of the UN Economic and Social council …this year the key focus is on Rural Women, specifically The empowerment of Rural Women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges.

The Australian government will participate in discussions in New York and then be expected to implement recommendations made at CSW. There will be two other events at CSW.
